Batik Creations with Saihou Omar Njie

Internationally known, Gambian artist Saihou Omar Njie will educate workshop participants on the history of batik making, an art form commonly employed in East Asia and West Africa, and instruct participants on how to make a batik of their own. Saihou guest-starred on an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, in which he demonstrated Batik making and made a batik vest for Mr. Rogers himself!

Art 101 for High School Students

These six art classes will introduce students to the use of three basic mediums—drawing pencils, color pencils, and pastels—to develop technique-based drawing and art skills that will promote confidence and creativity with personal self-expression through the art process. This class is designed for students 15 years of age through adulthood who have a unique desire to learn basic art skills and techniques in the creation of “artistic expression.”

Various art styles such as optical art, mobile creation, and sculpture will be explored, along with getting familiar with artists such as Alexander Calder, M.C. Esher, Victor Vasarely, and Bridget Riley being presented. Students will also have the ability to experiment with a variety of media. Recommended for homeschool students looking to fulfill an art requirement.
