Join Latrobe Art Center for some Summer art fun! For three days, children in 1st through 4th grade will be taught by artists from Latrobe Art Center and create works of art inspired by famous artists:

Project 1: Paul Klee – “Cat and Bird”

Students will begin by freehand drawing a cat and bird, following step-by-step guidance from the instructor. Once their drawing is complete, they will use a tissue paper and Mod Podge technique to create a smooth, textured surface. To make their artwork stand out, they will outline the cat and bird using 3D puffy paint. Shading will be applied with oil pastels, adding depth to the figures before coloring the cat’s face and bird with watercolor paint. The background will feature a cubist-inspired design, created with watercolor crayons that blend into a smooth texture when activated with water.

Project 2: Franz Marc – “Blue Horse”

Students will freehand draw the central figure of a horse, carefully following the instructor’s guidance. After outlining the shape, they will sketch a background featuring mountains and a landscape. To incorporate cubist elements, they will fold their paper to create dividing lines, which will then be outlined with black marker. Each section will be filled with rich colors using oil pastels, which will be blended with baby oil to achieve a smooth, polished effect. This technique will enhance the vibrancy and depth of their Blue Horse composition.

Project 3: Pablo Picasso – “The Bull”

Students will begin by selecting one of four bull head templates and tracing the shape onto transparent paper. They will decide whether to create a black or white bull and paint the head accordingly. Using printed examples for inspiration, they will freehand draw the bull’s face, incorporating cubist elements with different shapes. The face will then be outlined with Sharpie and copied for further development. Next, students will create their own templates from cardstock, which they will use to add layered details to their bull’s face. These shapes will be traced onto cardboard, colored with oil pastels, and mounted onto the bull’s face, resulting in a striking 3D artwork.
