Quickly becoming one of Latrobe’s biggest summer celebrations, we’re so excited to host the second annual Banana Split Festival coming up in August! This is an all-American family celebration designed to honor Latrobe as the birthplace of the world-famous banana split. With block parties, cupcake contests, sock-hops, and galas as part of the festival, it’s going to be a sweet summer in the Neighborhood!

Banana Split Since 1904, the banana split has been a hit with ice cream fans around the world given its rich and eclectic flavors. Working as a soda jerk for Tassell Pharmacy on Ligonier Street, David Strickler used his creative talents to invent a one-of-a-kind treat for a local college student who entered the store looking for something “different.” News of this culinary delight quickly spread to the students of St. Vincent College who were willing to pay 10 cents (nearly double the normal cost of an ice cream sundae) for this delicious creation.  Latrobe went bananas over the split, and eventually the popularity became an international sensation.  The one-hundredth birthday was celebrated in 2004, and we’re thrilled to be able to hold exciting festivities to commemorate this delectable historical invention!

With last year’s events being a huge success, there’s no doubt this year will be just as great. Starting off the festivities will be our block party which will be held on August 19. This open air event will take place on Ligonier Street and will feature live music, a DIY Banana Split Bar, and special guests Malt Shop Marty and Dairy Queen Dean. The top two winners from our Cupcake Wars contest will also be at the party to reveal their two hundred cupcake display! Everyone in the neighborhood is welcome to attend this event, so join us as we kick off our festivities! Icecream

Another great event that we will be holding is our Pop-the-Cork on Thursday, August 21. Naturally, the night’s theme will be banana splits, and the DIY Bar will be back! Wine and banana splits … perfect combination! Our neighbors from the Medicine Shoppe will also be joining us to share some of their cool new products, such as Simple Sugars Scrubs, Milk-house Candies, and samples from their new dessert line. Proceeds from the event will go towards sponsoring Faith in Action, making this event not only a great evening with friends, but a contribution towards a great cause.

MariaOur Yellow Tie Gala on August 22 is going to be a blast, with Malt Shop Marty and Dairy Queen Dean joining us again for a formal evening full of music, friends, and of course, banana splits! The winner from Cupcake Wars will be announced and guests will be able to sample the innovative creations. The WCCC Band with direction of Dr. Roderick Booker will be back by popular demand, having been a huge success at last year’s festivities as well as our Big Band Night in June. Tickets are required, but heavy hors d’oevres and drinks will be provided. This is an evening not to be missed!
Check out what else we have planned by looking at our dates to remember below. Latrobe is a special community full of great neighbors, so join us as we celebrate an exceptional town with a prominent (and delicious) heritage!  Yellowtiefront
